This is my first post from my BlackBerry. YhOo! I was working on my DashBoard for WordPress that would be easily usable on smartphones. So this is my first post without using my PC.

Right now I am working on the image upload module and website interface for mobile phones. I think I will have different versions of the front-end for different callphones. Say iPhone will be redirected to iphone.blackberrytricks.com and BlackBerry will go to blackberry.blackberrytricks.com.

Check out my blog for the news the modules and one day I will post them for download here.

No kidding any BlackBerry is reliable. Many people complained about Storm recently saying that the phone is not ready yet and they had issues with screen and other parts of it, but to say the truth, I own one, and have had no problems with it so far (using it for 3 month…).

At some point of time, and actually even now, BlackBerry Pearl was and is considered one of the most reliable phones. Look at those “babes” - they are so solid and there is almost no spot where something could fall off or crack.

However, Pearl didn’t have actual QWERTY keyboard, instead it was equipped with SURETYPE from BlackBerry. Another ‘Berry that most of us have heard about or even use right now is Curve. It’s an outstanding phone that you can actually drop as much as you want (don’t test!! ) and even I heard some story from the guys on CrackBerry that one was even “swimming”.

I am using my storm much harder then I would use any other phone, as it has the way more features. Sometimes it’s in my pocket in a pouch, or without it, sometimes I jog with it, sometimes bike with it, and it’s somewhere in my backpack. I don’t even mention how many times I dropped it (so far 4 - 2 of them on a concrete floor in underground parking). And it has only 2 scratches on its body (because of the concrete floor). The material it’s made of is very hard to scratch.

I am pretty sure I will never change my phone brand anymore.

Well, here I am sitting Vancouver Downtown, it’s 8:15 in the morning and I am preparing to start working. My 3 month old BlackBerry storm is on the table just in front of me and I realize that life without it would be hard. It’s not only about making calls every 20 minutes, it’s also about being able to check email anywhere you might be at the point of time when a new important email hits your inbox…

Another very important feature on BlackBerry is the Internet browser. I surf the Internet for around 600 Mb/month, that is pretty unusual for a cellphone use.

When I am bored and I feel that I could do something useful while sitting and waiting for a train, I read ebooks, online tutorials for C# (My favourite language for now…) or just type in posts for this blog.

I also use my Storm(9530)

as an morning alarm

as a contact and note book

camera (as it got 3.2 Mpx camera and if used properly can take “wild” pictures)

media storage

“newspaper”

for fun

for conference calls

texting

updating my twitter and Facebook (I LOVE to upload pictures on Facebook from my BlackBerry)

and that’s not the full list. I ususally drain my battery in one day, but phone itself would “stay alive” for 2-3 days if used normally.

I would be pleased to hear from you in the comments section what you find useful in your BlackBerries.

A month ago I went across one interesting application - iTokk Wireless. The guys have a web-based system where people can make calls using VoIP and their cellphones, but that’s not something that interested me, I was wondering more about how their application for BlackBerry works.

It’s a pretty interesting concept. You download the application, register online, and make calls from your contact list on your BlackBerry. The main factor that defines whether this application will be useful for you or not is your plan. It’s better to use the app if you have unlimited incoming calls (as that’s what iTokk Wireless does - it triggers an incomming call to your phone) and a data plan.

Initially your balance will be $0.25 that is enough to talk for 5 minutes within US and Canada, but later on you can top up your account if you like the app. I’ve been using it for a month, and spent $10 so far talking for around 200 mins for that much money.

To download the app checkout their website: www.itokk.mobi.

So, let’s make a call:

Download the iTokk Wireless BlackBerry application.

Register at www.itokk.mobi

Run the application on your BlackBerry and use the email and password you registered with to login. *

Close the application.

Now go to your contacts.

Highlight a person and click [BlackBerry Menu Button] > [Call Using ITOKK.MOBI]

You are done, the system will now initiate a connection and you will receive an incoming call in couple seconds. Pick up and wait for 3-5 seconds and you will be connected to the person you called.

*NOTE: I found that every time you reboot your BlackBerry, you need to login again.

I own a BlackBerry Storm, and as most of us know, its OS was kind of "green" when released. As a consequence the phone itself and applications on it are pretty slow and unresponsive. The newer OS version we install, the better the phone performs, but there are some ways to increase it's performance even more by just changing its settings.

In this article I am going to focus on BlackBerry Browser. As most of the BlackBerry users are not seeking for "cheesy graphics" on the Internet, but mostly read news, weather and other text based content, the following configuration will speed up your browser by 70%.

To optimize it for text reading we will

Open BlackBerry Internet Browser.

Save.

Enjoy!

P.S. You also can play with the settings as I know from my past experience, some images are pretty important when reading news. I would still strongly recommend to disable JavaScript (unless required) as it’s the most time-consuming precess when loading a page.

I was riding a SkyTrain in Vancouver, Canada looking at pedestrians and cars below. I was bored. Suddenly I realized that if BlackBerry supports text files, there must be a way to create and edit any type of file, say PHP, C#, or C… Below are the steps I went through to make my first .php file on my BlackBerry Storm (9530):

Find an appropriate text editor for BlackBerry that allows you to save files with different extensions. The one I used was BBNotePad (OTA).

Run the application and type in your code.

Click [BlackBerry Menu Button] > Save As… and save your file with any extension.

Vuala! Here is your file saved on your memory card and waiting for you to upload it to your server or home PC or anywhere where you run your PHP or other files. My next goal is to find a great FTP Client to be able to upload files to a server directly from BlackBerry. So far, I found couple, but none of them worked correctly for storm. I wonder if it’s because Storm doesn’t use wireless and Internet connection is provided by EVDO/3G network.
